Dukinfield Amateur Operatic Society

The original Dukinfield Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society was founded in 1907. It gave many outstanding musical comedy successes at the Theatre Royal, Ashton-under-Lyne, until it disbanded in 1927. After a lapse of several years, the present society was reformed in November 1945, and in October 1946 the first production “Betty” was performed at the Jubilee Hall, Dukinfield, we moved back to the Theatre Royal then to the ABC Cinema which eventually became Tameside Hippodrome.
Many notable shows followed including “The Sound Of Music” and “My Fair Lady” which won awards with the Manchester Evening News, in 1984 we had the challenge of presenting the North West Amateur Premiere of “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” then again in 1996 we presented the North West Premiere of “Singin in the Rain”. Many other notable shows have been “42nd Street, Crazy for You, Scrooge, Copacabana and Thoroughly Modern Millie”

Through many of our successful years we had Norma M Deane at the helm, she led the fight in the seventies to save the theatre from closing, and she was still there in 2008 when the local council decided to close it. Unfortunally Norma is no longer with us, and we had to find a new home, the George Lawton Hall, whether permanent or temporary only time will tell.
