“ABBEY IS LIKE A FAMILY” Our aim is to promote “Live Amateur Theatre” in our locality and we offer an enjoyable, worthwhile hobby, one which gives great pleasure to our members and to the numerous people who make up our audiences Members not only have the opportunity to appear on stage but also to try their hand at many skills and activities which take place behind the scenes. Abbey Musical Society was formed in 1949 with our first production, “The Mikado” being performed in the same year. We currently have about 70 members, with around 50 appearing on stage and the remaining 20 working behind the scenes. Two shows are produced and performed by us each year, a musical in March and either another musical or a summer concert in July. Ashton-Under-Lyne Operatic Society Ashton-Under-Lyne Operatics Society Founded in 1899. We currently produce a Musical in the spring. It all started for Ashton-under-Lyne Operatic Society over a 100 years ago when Lizzie Burgess, Herbert Livesey and Tom Ogden got together and formed a group to present “Liley of Kilarney” at Ashton Town Hall towards the end of 1899. Lizzie went on to be the leading soprano for the Carl Rosa Opera Company but Herbert and Tom continued and saw the Society grow in stature. In 1904 when it joined forces with the Ashton Dramatic Society, a move was made to the Theatre Royal on Oldham Road. We still have a poster from that year for the presentation of “Les Cloche de Cornville” and “The Red Lamp” which is proudly displayed at our exhibitions. In 1912 another change of venue was made by crossing Oldham Road to the Empire Hippodrome. Apart from a return to the Theatre Royal in the 1920s it has remained, with various name changes, our home ever since until 2008 when the theatre closed for refurbishment. Alas we are still waiting for it to reopen. Until then we have played at the George Lawton Hall, Mossley and Oldham Coliseum, dependant on show and venue availability. In the late 1920s Charles Booth joined the Society and later proved to be its best asset through his vision and drive. Charles joined the Committee as Publicity Manager in 1930, and through various positions, eventually became Chairman in 1953. During his time as Chairman the Society certainly went from strength to strength with productions such as the Ivor Novello shows, and at the time, the very adventurous “West Side Story” in 1964. Charles remained a very active Chairman until 1980 when he retired to become Society President. Since the Society endowed a cot at Ashton Infirmary in 1932 we have continued with contributions to charity, when we can. Bacup Royal Court Theatre is operated by Bacup Royal Court Theatre Group Ltd. Bacup Royal Court Theatre Group Ltd. is a registered charity and everybody who works at the theatre is a volunteer. We hire our professional theatre and conference facilities to community organisations, performing groups, local societies, dance and drama schools, businesses and education providers from across the North West. We also work with Agents, Artists and touring companies to provide a wide range of entertainment and events of all genres which appeal to local audiences. Bollington Light Opera Group The Bollington Light Opera Group, affectionately known as BLOG, has entertained Bollington audiences for more than 40 years with a wide variety of high quality musical theatre performances. We generally provide two shows each year, in May and November, in a five day run (Tuesday – Saturday) with a matinée performance, ideal for children, on the Saturday afternoon. The May production is normally a well known and much loved musical, and in November we put on a variety production called ‘Showtime‘ in which we perform popular songs from a variety of well-liked shows. Four good friends got together and wondered what they could do to help him, these friends were Tommy Parkinson, Jed Rudd, Melvyn Bates and Kay Lilly. They decided to do what they did best …….. they put together a show, and what a show, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. They each donated £10 to raise the £40 they needed to hire the theatre. They contacted Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice who personally granted them special permission to perform the show without a licence. The costumes were hired for the princely sum of £10, the production team, band and cast all worked free of charge and rehearsed in rehearsal rooms that were provided free of charge ....… and so Congress Players were born! Over the years Congress has donated over 150k to various charities in the North West including. Dr Kershaw’s, Francis House, Guide Dogs for the Blind, KidsCan, Ruebens Retreat and many others and the productions staged have featured many of the best amateur performers in the North West.

DUKINFIELD AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY About Us We are a very friendly, upbeat amateur theatre society based in Dukinfield, Tameside which is east of Manchester. Formed in 1946, we are of a very high standard and are not too heavy on the purse-strings. In fact, we are one of the societies with the cheapest membership fees in the Greater Manchester area. Our Productions: Our calendar features a musical production in the autumn, usually the third week in October at the George Lawton Hall, Mossley and a play in the spring, usually around the third week in March at Dukinfield Methodist Church Hall. Rehearsals for the musical are usually weekly, and commence at the beginning of May with Dancers on Monday evenings and full Ensemble on Thursday evenings. Principals are as called on either evening and rehearse in a seperate room. These rehearsals take place at the Tameside Deaf Association, 225 Mossley Road, Ashtonunder-Lyne OL6 6LY at 7.45pm. At the beginning of September, Sunday afternoon rehearsals kick-in from 1-5pm with the venue being announced nearer the time. There is a tea break halfway through the rehearsal, and our thriving Social Committee make excellent Tea, Coffee and Vimto at just 50p for a mug with a Biscuit. The play begins with a read-through/audition just before Christmas, and rehearsals start right at the beginning of January on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at Dukinfield Methodist Church Hall. We perform one large musical production in the Spring each year, most years a week before Easter. We also organise a calendar of activities throughout the year. Each production brings new members, who we always welcome with open arms. Auditions normally take place in September time, with rehearsals starting not long after. We take a short break during Christmas and New Year, and continue rehearsals twice a week until the show. We are very proud of all our cast, crew and creative teams of each show we present, in fact all our members seem to love the close family feel Hyde Musical Society offers. Starting rehearsals way back in 1940 with our first performances at Hyde Town Hall in 1941. It really is a celebratory feat. Our society like many saw the hard times of the pandemic through 2020 and 2021 with the closure of theatres. We are so proud to have leaped back on stage at Hyde Festival Theatre in Spring 2022 with our 80th year production ‘All Shook Up’ - which was received better than we could have ever imagined. Established in 1904, originally as Lytham Amateur Operatic Society, we are one of the original amateur theatre groups on the Fylde Coast of the UK. Mid Cheshire Musical Theatre Company (MCMTC) is one of the country’s oldest musical theatre societies – tracing its roots back to 1916 when it first started presenting popular light opera at the old Northwich Brine Baths in Victoria Road. At the outbreak of World War II, performances were put on hold, and it wasn’t until 1949 that the newly renamed Northwich Music Society resumed its productions – first at The Pavilion Theatre (situated at the back of The Regal cinema, which stood on the site now occupied by Waitrose) and then, later, at Hartford Secondary Modern School. 1954 saw the birth of the Winnington Amateur Operatic Society which staged its musicals at ICI’s Crescent Hall until, in 1960, the two societies amalgamated to become Mid Cheshire Amateur Operatic Society. This coincided with the opening of Northwich Memorial Hall, which hosted the Society’s productions until 2008. In 1968, the bold step was taken of purchasing the headquarters in Oakwood Lane, Barnton, which was used as the rehearsal rooms, as well as the performance space for the junior section – the Mid Cheshire Youth Theatre. This remained the headquarters until 2011, when, due to high running costs, the decision was made to sell Oakwood Lane Theatre. MCMTC currently performs its shows at Hartford’s Grange Theatre, and rehearses at University Primary Academy Weaverham. At the same time, it was decided to update the society’s name to better reflect its more contemporary programme of musical theatre, and the current name of Mid Cheshire Musical Theatre Company came into being.

We have a very active calendar of events based around our yearly productions of a winter production, a play and a musical production. Alongside this we have our exciting and talented Next Generation youth theatre group which meets weekly and produces its own productions throughout the year. New Mills Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society THE HISTORY OF NMAODS The New Mills Operatic and Dramatic Society was formed in 1922 and put on shows regularly each year, mostly musicals, such as The Gondoliers, Iolanthe, and The Yeoman of the Guard. The members worked extremely hard to produce these shows which were always of a high standard. The Society produced two shows a year until the outbreak of the Second World War, which brought all this to an end. “Live” shows returned to the stage in 1948 when the “Amateurs” obtained a temporary licence to perform. Plays were produced to begin with as finances would not support as full scale musical. However, two plays per year were staged successfully and were usually in a light-hearted vein. At long last, after a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication by the electricians and members of the Society, a full scale musical was performed – No No Nanette in November 1952. The Operatics were back! No live shows were seen on stage other than the Society shows except for the odd band concert or male voice choir, but as each year came round, so there were staged two plays and one musical. This continued with huge success until Sailor Beware in 1959 when disaster struck! On March 21st 1959, the Sheffield Theatre Cinema Company closed the doors of the Art Theatre and left the Operatics homeless. From now onwards, the story of the Art Theatre is also the story of the Amateurs, and although they have always been closely connected, the remainder of this story proves the dedication of a group of people with one aim. This dedication has never disappeared. A Special General Meeting was held on April 7th 1959 to explore the possibilities of leasing or even buying the theatre, which remained closed all summer. On September 26th 1959 the Art Theatre re-opened. The Society had taken a two year tenancy, worked solidly seven days a week for ten weeks, then opened a spick and span theatre once again to entertain. The main problem, as always, was finance but thanks to the regular hard workers and individual fund raising efforts, in April 1961 the Art Theatre was leased for a further two years. Fund raising schemes were launched, but the job of running a theatre almost became too much, and a unanimous decision was taken to end the lease on June 24th 1964. However, true to fighting form, the Society finally, and after much discussion, decided to “Hang on” a little longer and, as musicals were becoming more remunerative, two musicals per year became the policy. In 1966 the memorable decision to buy the Art Theatre was taken and the “Buy a Brick” scheme was launched. Buy a brick for £1.00, and the bricks at the front of the Theatre were painted out to show the progress. By the end of the last night of the November show Perchance to Dream, the target of £1000.00 was short by £20.00. The President made a speech from the stage and as he was speaking, members of the audience called out “here’s a pound”, “here’s another”, the atmosphere was electric and when the President announced “we’ve done it” the place erupted. Our home has been the Simpson Memorial Hall on Moston Lane since 1919 and to this day, it is where we not only rehearse almost every week of the year, but where we perform most of our dramatic productions and concerts. Several moves later our musical productions have been staged here in Middleton, our first, The Desert Song being at the Civic Centre. Throughout the 1990s the Society was able to perform two musical productions each year, but rising costs mean that we are now able to finance only one musical show each year, relying on our plays, concerts and other fundraising activities to fund these. NMAODS last show at the Civic Centre was our award-winning Anything Goes, however, with the closure of the Civic Centre in 2008 the Society has now moved to the new Middleton Arena, with which we look forward to a long association.
P.A.D.O.S. PADOS Studio Theatre St Mary’s Rd, Prestwich, Manchester M25 1AQ 0161 773 7729 In 1918 St Hilda’s, Heaton Park, (Heaton Park is a district of Prestwich) Glee Club -formed earlier in the 20th Century- rejoiced for the ending of the Great War and a healthy influx of men returning from the trenches of the Western Front. (The society is also proud to be one of the few who continued to entertain throughout World War II with all female casts. There is strong evidence that there certainly also existed in Prestwich a Dramatic Society – Prestwich Amateur Dramatic Society (PADS)- in November 1887 and a programme is held by PADOS for the performance of a play – ‘Jessy Vere’ or ‘The Return of the Wanderer’ (a domestic drama by C. H. Hazlewood) presented at Prestwich Liberal Club. This Club is immediately in front of the former Chester Street Wesleyan Church Hall and the 1919 venue of the first full length Operetta – ‘Trial by Jury’ presented by the society. Whilst research continues, there is strong belief that this 1887 Society (PADS) probably amalgamated with ‘The Glee Club’ to create PADOS (ie: ‘Singers’ and ‘Dramatic Actors’) as it is known today. The society has posters dating back to the early 20th century which indicate that they once performed a different operetta on alternate nights, with the cast switching between leading parts and chorus! The society has a virtually unbroken history of performances since its inception except for a short break at the end of WW1 and a longer break during 1941 – 45 when many of the 50+ strong chorus were actively involved in other equally dramatic events. Having played for many years at the Theatre Royal and then the Hippodrome in Rochdale, the Society moved to a temporary home at the ABC cinema before moving to The Gracie Fields Theatre in 1977. In 2015 the society changed its name to Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) as, in more modern times, productions have been musical theatre rather than of an operatic nature. The new name is also a more accurate reflection of the professional nature of the company’s productions. In October 2021, RMTC found their new home at the iconic town centre venue Champness Hall and brought theatre back to the heart of Rochdale, with the hugely successful, sell out production Legally Blonde. This was followed in May 2022 with the equally successful Broadway musical comedy The Producers.

Choir rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings 8 – 10pm, Tyldesley Methodist Church, Elliott Street, Tyldesley Manchester M29 8JE. Visit membership. The Society’s annual show alternates between Gilbert & Sullivan and other composers’ operettas firmly retaining the emphasis on quality of music, four-part harmony and high chorus content. The Gipsy Baron, La Belle Helene, Die Fledermaus, Orpheus in the Underworld, The Merry Widow and White Horse Inn have all proved great successes and provided audiences with a greater variety of musical style and performance. The Society aims to produce performances of the highest quality and all shows are accompanied by a professional orchestra. The society’s Autumn Concerts aim to strike the right note for everyone with a variety of Songs from the Shows, Broadway, Popular and Classical Music.

Our aim is to produce highquality pieces of theatre, allowing our members to showcase their talents, as well as providing a place for new members to learn new skills in our wonderful hobby In January 2021, our Artistic Director Lewis Baron, decided he wanted to produce a charity musical theatre concert in order to raise funds for the Theatre Support Fund+. He teamed up with our now Musical Director, Ben Evans-Clarke, and together, with the help of a 13 strong cast, they were able to produce a Socially-Distanced (due to the event taking place in Stage 3 COVID Restrictions), outdoor concert which was a resounding success, raising £750 for TSF+. Following this event, the pair decided they wanted to produce further productions, and so Together for Theatre Productions was formed.
